Kallos Joins Green Campaign

Benjamin Kallos, an erstwhile Council candidate, is now joining Mark Green’s public advocate campaign.

Kallos will become the director of policy for Green, the public advocate from 1994 to 2001, and work on expanding the campaign’s Internet outreach and the website.

“I hope to work on Internet strategy to make sure many New York City citizens can share their ideas and the website can get out to as many people as possible,” Kallos said.

As an attorney, Kallos has a background in information technology, having developed a registered voter database online and assisted the New York County Lawyers Association to improve electronic case filing.

Kallos was recently chief of staff to Assembly Member Jonathan Bing. He left that position to mount a campaign for Council Member Jessica Lappin’s seat when she entertained the idea of running for public advocate.

Lappin has since dropped any citywide consideration and is likely to run for reelection unopposed. Kallos is still registered with the Campaign Finance Board as a Council candidate, but only to raise money in order to qualify for public matching funds if and when the seat becomes open.

While Kallos still has an ambition to succeed Lappin, Kallos said he is joining the public advocate campaign because Green advocates for the same principles he did while running for Council.

“My campaign was about transparency and openness; Mark Green’s entire campaign is about openness,” Kallos said. “Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to share some of my ideas of creating a transparent accountable government.”
